• The study of ancient astronomy on the basis of writings and sites of astronomical significance. Archaeoastronomy has little contact with the conventional study of the history of astronomy. Instead it concentrates upon the search for astronomical significance in ancient artefacts like solar and other observatories in Europe, China, Latin America, North America and elsewhere. This work yields two main types of benefit – information on ancient cultures, and information on the sky at particular periods in the past, especially the appearance of comets, novae, eclipses and meteor showers in ancient skies.
