Auger effect
  • noun the emission of an electron from an excited positive ion to produce an ion with a double charge
  • A process where an excited electron is transferred to a lower energy level without emitting radiation. This excess energy is used instead to expel an electron of the same atom. This may occur in any element except hydrogen and helium. Also called autoionization, or internal photoionization.
