baseband
  • The band of frequencies produced by a transducer, such as a microphone or TV camera, which will be used to modulate a carrier. For instance, in the transmission of music, the baseband should encompass the audible range of frequencies. A TV camera produces baseband signals which need to be modulated to be able to be viewed by a conventional TV set. demodulation of a previously modulated wave returns the baseband.
  • A communication system in which unmodulated digital signals are sent over a transmission line. Used in LANs, such as Ethernet. One set of data is sent at a time. This contrasts with broadband, where multiple sets of data are transmitted simultaneously. Also known as baseband system.
