- Mathematical equation relating the distances between the distances of the planets from the Sun. More formally known as the Titius-Bode Law since Titius of Wittemberg published it in 1766 and Bode in Berlin made it widely known in 1782. Take the series 0, 3, 6 etc: add 4 to each number: divide by 10. In the Law this gives planetary distances in AU – 0.4 for Mercury, 0.7 for Venus, 1.0 for the Earth, etc. Bode’s Law breaks down later on and predicts a complete planet where there are only the asteroids. It is now regarded only as a fascinating coincidence.
