- A connection, usually via a cable pair, made into a part of a local loop that does not lie along a direct transmission path between a central station and the premises of a customer. Formerly utilized, for instance to connect party lines. A bridged tap creates an impedance mismatch within the transmission line, which in turn produces signal reflections. This is not usually a problem in POTS, but may create significant interference in high frequency communications, such as those of DSL services.
