capacitor
  • A component which has capacitance. The conductors separated by the dielectric material are known as electrodes or plates. The value of the capacitance will vary depending on the size, shape, and composition of the conductors, the distance between them, and on the dielectric. In addition to storing charge, a capacitor blocks DC, and may be fixed or variable. There are various types, including mica, electrolytic, metallized paper, and MOS capacitors. Formerly known as condenser (3).
