centre of mass
  • The point at which the mass of a complex object appears to lie. For a simple object like the Earth the centre of mass is near its geometrical centre, but for a system like a multiple star the centre of mass is in constant motion and could lie in deep space rather than inside a particular object. Knowing the centre of mass of a system allows outside observers to simplify their calculations by pretending that a complex object is a point mass.
