charge-coupled device
  • noun an electronic device operated by charge, especially one which converts photons of light into a digital signal, converting an optical image into a digital image.
  • Electronic device used in astronomy because it can register in digital form the arrival of every photon striking it. CCDs can be used with visible and ultraviolet light, whose photons cause charge to build up on the CCD according to the amounts of radiation falling upon each small area (pixel) of its surface.
