Compton effect
  • noun the decrease in energy and increase in wavelength of a photon after it interacts with an electron
  • An increase in the wavelengths of X-rays and gamma rays when they have been scattered by electrons present in matter. After a collision, the scattered radiation has decreased in energy, while the electron has increased in energy. Also called Compton scattering, Compton process, or Compton-debye effect.
