computer storage
  • A device which provides for the holding and accessing of data for an indefinite period. Such information is kept in a machine-readable format, and should be maintained intact in the event of an interruption in system power, The main types of storage media are magnetic, such as tapes and hard disks, and optical, which include holograms and DVDs. Storage is usually quantified in multiples of bytes. For example, a computer hard drive with a 256 gigabyte capacity can hold approximately 256 billion bytes, or characters, of information. Although storage and memory are often used synonymously, memory refers to a more temporary form of holding and accessing data, such as that in RAM. Also called storage (1).
