- Force which appears to operate on anything travelling from the pole of a rotating object, like the Earth, towards its equator. The Coriolis Force results from the rotation itself, which moves the Earth under the body as it is in motion. On the Earth, Coriolis Forces affect missiles, ocean currents and airliners in flight. The idea of Coriolis Forces illustrates relative frames of reference – the force seems to act on the smaller object, although an outside observer would be more likely to see it in terms of the large object moving relative the smaller one, and to see the latter as being in a state of straight line motion.
