cyclic redundancy check
- A technique used for error detection while transmitting digital data. In it, the sending computer performs a complex calculation based on the data, and attaches the resulting value. The receiving computer performs the same calculation, and the result is compared to the original value. If the values do not match, an error has occurred. It provides a greater degree of error detection than a checksum. Its abbreviation is CRC. Also called cyclic redundancy code, or cyclical redundancy check.
