decimal number system
  • A numbering system whose base is 10, meaning that there are 10 digits in this system, specifically 0 to 9. All digits to the left of the decimal point represent successive positive powers of 10, while those to the right of the decimal point are successive negative powers of 10. For example, 456.789 = (4 × 102) + (5 × 101) + (6 × 10°) + (7 × 10-1) + (8 × 10-2) + (9 × 10-3). Also called decimal (2), or decimal system (2).
