dense wavelength division multiplexing
- Its abbreviation is DWDM, or dense WDM. A data transmission technology in which multiple optical signals are multiplexed onto a single optical fiber. Each of the signals has a different wavelength, and with close spectral spacing, can increase the capacity of a single fiber to over 1 Tbps. In addition, DWDM-based networks can carry different types of traffic at different speeds. For instance, ATM and SONET simultaneously. Also called dense wave division multiplexing, or wavelength division multiplexing.
