differential pulse-code modulation
- A pulse modulation technique used for conversion of an analog signal into a digital signal. In it, each segment of the continuous analog signal is sampled, and on each occasion, one bit is generated. If there is a relative increase in amplitude from segment to segment, a 1 state is produced, a relative decrease produces a 0 state, and when there is no change in relative amplitude there is no change in state. Operates well in the presence of noise. Its abbreviation is DPCM, or differential PCM. Also called delta pulse code modulation, or delta modulation.
