• In graphics, a technique employed to simulate additional colors, or shades of gray, when displaying or printing images. For instance, by varying patterns of white and black dots, variations of gray are produced. Also called dither (1).
  • The incorporation of a small perturbation or a little noise, for instance, to minimize the effects of minor nonlinearities. Used, for example, in measuring instruments. Also called dither (2).
