dwarf Novae
  • Very faint stars which are prone to episodes of extreme brightening at more or less regular intervals. Their light output can increase more than tenfold in a few hours before diminishing to its normal level over a period of a few weeks. The brightening seems to be caused by material sucked from a red giant companion star flaring up near the surface of a white dwarf which traps material from the expanding red giant.
