E and M signaling
  • The use of two leads for communication between a trunk circuit and a signaling circuit. The E lead transmits from the signaling circuit to the trunk circuit, and the M lead transmits from the trunk circuit to the signaling circuit. E and M originally stood for ear and mouth, respectively. Also called E and M lead signaling.
