electric hysteresis
  • A property of certain dielectrics, in which electric polarization is retained after removal of the electric field. Such an effect can last up to several years, and it is the basis for electrets. Also called electric hysteresis, dielectric absorption, or dielectric hysteresis. In the case of a ferroelectric material, also called ferroelectric hysteresis.
  • Internal friction occurring in a dielectric as a result of exposure to variable electric field. This friction may cause enough heat to cause failure of the dielectric.
  • synonym electrical hysteresis
