- A gradual loss of strength, or a slow disappearance. Said, for instance, of a received signal.
- A periodic reduction, or a gradual change in the strength of a signal, due to fluctuations in the transmission medium. For example, a radio signal may vary in this manner due to atmospheric conditions, or to movements of a mobile receiver. Also called fade (2), or fade-out (3).
- A feature of certain digital music players, such as CDs, in which there is a fade-out (1) followed by a fade-in (1) when changing tracks or locations on the recorded medium. This provides for a smoother transition which is easier on the listener.
