floppy disk
  • A digital magnetic storage medium which is in the form of a rotating plastic plate which is flexible. Information is encoded by altering the magnetic polarity of minute portions on the coated surface of such a disk. Floppy disks are much slower than hard disks, generally hold 1.44 megabytes of data, and their usual format is 3.5 inches, with a rigid case. Also spelled floppy disc. Also called floppy, flexible disk, or diskette.
