- The pulsar 2CG 195 +04, which appears to be only about just over 500 light years from Earth and therefore the closest highly condensed matter object (neutron star or black hole) to us. Geminga is a supernova remnant and is observable optically and in gamma radiation and X-rays. Its nearness is indicated by its brightness in both types of radiation as well as by its large proper motion of about 0.4 arc seconds per year. The supernova explosion occurred about 300,000 years ago and would have appeared as bright as the full Moon from Earth.
