- Form of energy whose existence is predicted by General relativity. It has been looked for by physicists and astronomers using instruments such as large metal cylinders carefully suspended in caverns below the Earth’s surface. Gravitational Radiation would be observed, if at all, in the form of gravity waves, very long waves of fluctuating gravitational attraction. Gravity waves are extremely weak – the orbital movement of Jupiter about the Sun produces about 5kW of gravitational radiation, about as much as the electricity consumption of a small house. Binaries with massive, close components contain more gravitational energy and seem likelier candidates to emit detectable gravity waves.
