hyperbolic navigation system
- A navigation system, such as loran or Decca, in which a ship or aircraft receives synchronized signals from at least two known locations at any given moment. The charting of the time delay with reference to each transmitter yields a hyperbola whose focuses are these transmitting stations. A second pair of stations can be used to draw another hyperbola, and the position of a ship or aircraft is the point on the map where the two curves intersect. Also called hyperbolic radionavigation system.
