• Abbreviation of integrated circuit. A small piece of semiconductor material upon which miniature electronic circuit components, such as transistors or resistors, are placed. An IC may have hundreds of millions of such components. ICs may be classified by the number of electronic components contained. For example, an IC with 1,000,000 or more components is labeled as having ultra-large scale integration. Another way to classify ICs is by construction, as in monolithic IC, thin film IC, or hybrid IC. Also called chip (1), microchip, or microcircuit.
