Joule effect
  • The heat produced when an electric current passes through a material, due to resistance. A certain portion of the electrical energy passing through a conductor is converted into heat energy due to the resistance of said conductor. Also called heating effect.
  • The mechanical deformation of a material, especially that which is ferromagnetic, when placed in a magnetic field. For example, if such a material is placed in a direction parallel to an applied magnetic field, its length will change. The intensity of the field will determine the extent of mechanical deformation. Also called magnetostriction.
