  • Abbreviation of light-emitting diode. A diode consisting of a pn junction which emits light when forward-biased. The light produced is incoherent, and its wavelength depends on the semiconductor material and doping. Such light may be red, another visible color, or it may be located the infrared region. LEDs are frequently utilized in alphanumeric readouts and for indicating the on/off status of a function, device, or piece of equipment.
