light cone
  • The imaginary cone shape in time and space on whose surface we can observe objects elsewhere in the universe. Since light travels at about 300,000km/sec, we can see things that happened in the last second at that distance. For a time ten billion years ago, a significant fraction of the age of the universe, we can see events ten billion light years away, defining the size of the light cone we see at that depth in time.
