- noun the course of displacement of a point when two or more periodic wave motions are superimposed, commonly used to describe two sinusoidal waves at right angles
- A symmetrical pattern which is formed when two harmonically-related quantities are superimposed at right angles to each other. A common instance is the pattern which appears on the screen of an oscilloscope when signals are applied simultaneously to the horizontal and vertical deflection plates. For example, if the horizontal signal has twice the frequency of the vertical signal, an upright figure eight will be displayed. Each frequency combination produces its own unique pattern, and such figures are utilized, for instance, for testing and adjustments. Also called Lissajous pattern.
- synonym Lissajous pattern
