- US Radar mapping mission which provided detailed mapping of the entire surface of Venus with a resolution of about 120m. Magellan was launched in 1989 and arrived at Venus in August 1990. A stripped-down version of a bigger planned mission, the Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar (VOIR), Magellan ceased operating in October 1994. Towards the end of its life, after the end of the radar imaging programme, Magellan was placed into a low orbit and used to provide detailed data on Venus’ gravitational field by observations of its orbital movement.
