Magnetic-Ink Character Recognition
  • A character recognition system in which characters printed in magnetic ink are scanned and converted into digital code suitable for further processing. In addition to the special ink, said characters have a specified font, to help ensure proper translation. A common example is the system used by financial institutions to sense the information printed at the bottom of checks, for proper handling. Its abbreviation is MICR.
