- A high-capacity disc technology which utilizes both optics and magnetism to write, read, and rewrite data. A laser is first utilized to heat the recordable portions on the disc to the magnetic transition temperature, and then the bits are aligned magnetically. A laser is used for subsequent reading, and such discs are usually available either in a 3.5 inch or 5.25 inch diameter format. Also spelled magneto-optic recording.
