• Acronym for Musical Instrument digital Interface. A standardized interface, along with its communications protocols, which enables the interconnection of computers, synthesizers, musical instruments, and other electronic music devices. MIDI encodes various aspects of sounds which are recorded or exchanged, such as the pitch, length, delay, and amplitude of each note, as opposed to containing actual music or other sounds. MIDI allows recorded information to be manipulated in many ways, such as combining diverse instruments to create new sounds, or the changing of the key of a song through a simple command. Other features include translating what is played on an instrument into sheet music. Also called MIDI interface.
