MIP mapping
  • A form of texture mapping in which an original high resolution texture map is scaled multiple times to represent the texture at different distances. Each subsequent map is half the size of the previous one. MIP mapping helps provide for smoother images at various depths, and can be combined with other techniques for added realism or visual appeal. Used, for instance, in CAD and video games. Also spelled mipmapping. The MIP portion of the term is taken from the Latin phrase multum in parvo, meaning "much in little".
