modem
  • A device which enables a computer to transmit and receive information over telephone lines. For transmission, a computer modulates a carrier signal so that it contains digital information in a form that can be transmitted over analog lines. It does the opposite for reception. Most modems feature data compression and error correction. Also called telephone modem.
  • Any signal conversion device which combines the functions of a demodulator and modulator.
