negative charge
  • The charge, or a multiple of the charge, of an electron. Electrons possess a negative charge which is equal in magnitude to the positive charge of a proton.
  • The charge a material or entity acquires when it has an excess of electrons. For example, if a dielectric such as glass or amber is rubbed with a dissimilar dielectric such as silk or wool, and each is separated, the silk or wool acquires a negative charge, while the glass or amber acquires a positive charge. Also called negative electrification, or negative electricity.
