normalization
  • In relational database management, the process of converting complex data structures into simpler relations which minimize or eliminate redundancies, inconsistencies, and ambiguities. Normalization involves the creation of multiple tables which provide for the most flexible and stable data structure obtainable, so that future maintenance of said structure is kept to a minimum.
  • In programming, the process of changing the format of a number so that it fits within a prescribed range. For example, to adjust the mantissa and exponent of a floating-point number so that portions of it are in a specified range.
