null modem cable
  • A special cable which allows two computers to be connected to each other without using modems. For instance, the use of a cable which crosses the inputs and outputs to connect two computers via an RS-232 port. In this way, the signal from the output pins of one computer serves as the input for the other. Used, for example, for exchanging computer files, or for interactive play between users of different computers located in the same room. Such cables usually require the distance between the computers to be comparatively short. Also called null modem (2).
