oxidation-reduction
  • noun
    (written as oxidation–reduction)
a reversible chemical reaction between two substances where one is oxidised and the other is reduced
  • A chemical reaction in which at least one atom, molecule, ion, or radical gains at least one electron, while at least one atom, molecule, ion, or radical loses at least one electron. Oxidations almost always involve a simultaneous reduction, and vice versa. For example, in a reaction where iron combines with oxygen to form iron oxide, the iron is oxidized, as its valence increases from 0 to +3, while the oxygen is reduced, as its valence decreases from 0 to -2. Its abbreviation is redox.
