- An error-detection procedure which verifies if there is even or odd parity. For each byte transmitted, an additional bit is added, which can be a 0 or 1, so that all bytes are even or odd. At the receiving location, this parity is checked, to be sure it is the same it was before sending. If it is, the transmission has passed this test of data integrity. Also used for data storage. Also called parity checking, or odd-even check.
