- A phototube incorporating one or more dynodes. Electrons emitted from its photocathode are reflected by the dynodes, each producing more and more electrons. Depending on the number of dynodes, the amplification factor may be in the millions. Also spelled photomultiplier tube. Its abbreviation is PMT. Also called photomultiplier, electron-multiplier phototube, or multiplier phototube.
