- noun the change in wavelength and phase of monochromatic light as it travels through a transparent substance
- An effect observed when monochromatic light passes through a transparent medium, and in which some of the scattered light has frequencies above or below that of the incident radiation. This results from inelastic collisions between incident photons and molecules in the medium, which change the vibrational or rotational energy of the latter. This produces additional, fainter, lines in the spectrum. Also called Raman scattering.
- synonym Raman scattering
