- A component, circuit, or device which passes current in one direction only. Although semiconductor rectifiers are prevalent, there are also electrolytic and mechanical devices which perform this function, in addition to rectifier tubes, among others. Rectifiers are utilized mostly to convert an AC into a DC, but may also be used, for instance, to demodulate a radio frequency signal to obtain an audio or video signal. A full-wave rectifier rectifies both the positive and the negative half-cycles of an applied AC input, while a half-wave rectifier provides a DC output only during alternate half-cycles of its input current.
