• A component or device with a fixed resistance (2). A resistor opposes the flow of current, with the concomitant conversion of electrical energy into heat energy. There are various examples, including carbon, chip, film, thin film, and wire-wound resistors. A rheostat, or variable resistor, is one whose resistance may be adjusted, while that of a fixed resistor cannot be varied. Also called resistance element (2), resistor element (2), or resistance (4).
