- An electrical outlet, which in addition to the current-carrying contacts, has a third contact which serves for connection to a grounding conductor. Devices and equipment which are to benefit from this safety feature must have an appropriate three-prong plug which is inserted into this outlet. There are other possible arrangements for such outlets, including the use of lateral grounding contacts which make contact with metallic strips on the side of the plug. Also called grounding outlet, grounding receptacle, or three-prong outlet.
