Schiaparelli, Giovanni (1835–1910)
- Italian astronomer who discovered the link between comets and meteor showers. He is best-known for his observations of Mars, in describing which he used the term ‘canali’ for markings he thought might be channels of some sort. These were taken up as ‘canals’ in the English-speaking world, although he had not intended to imply artificiality. This gave rise to scientific and fictional speculation (Lowell) about life of Mars.
