short-haul modem
  • A device which is intended to optimize the use of local data communications facilities, such as those within a building or with a maximum radius of a few kilometers. Such a device, for instance, can condition a digital signal transmitted by an RS232 interface so that it can be reliably transmitted up to several kilometers, instead of the standard 50 to several hundred feet. Also called line driver, or limited-distance modem.
