single-photon emission computed tomography
- Its acronym is SPECT. A computed tomography medical diagnostic technique which measures the emission of photons of a given energy emitted by radioactive tracers introduced into the body being scanned. The resolution and sensitivity of SPECT is significantly lower than that of PET, but its comparatively affordable cost makes it more generally accessible. Used, for instance, to study lesions and blood flow through the brain. Also called single-photon emission computerized tomography, or single-photon emission computed tomography scan.
