solenoid
  • An electromechanical device which incorporates a coil wound around a movable core, and which produces a magnetic field when a current flows through it, inductively moving said core. The core is usually consists of a ferromagnetic cylindrically-shaped plunger or rod. Used, for instance, to convert electrical energy into the mechanical energy utilized to operate electromechanical devices and equipment.
  • A coil which has been wound into the shape of a cylinder. When a moveable ferromagnetic core is inserted in its center, the result is a solenoid (1). Also called solenoid coil (2).
