SS 433
  • Star in the SS Catalogue (Star Classification) which emits two powerful beams of radiation into space and which seems to be a rare or unique source of X-ray, radio and optical emissions. SS 433, a 14th magnitude star in Aquila, appears to consist of a star of about three solar masses orbited by a smaller star, less massive than the Sun, surrounded by a disc of material which it is drawing from the larger star. Material falling from the disc onto the star forms jets which emit X-rays and other radiation.
